My toddler is having a full blown meltdown at the moment.?

She is 2, I mentioned that we will be going to a birthday party of our friend when her dad comes home. She started screaming and crying that she wanted to go NOW! She started throwing things and laying on the ground and kicking just like a clic tantrum. There is no talking to her right now, she won't listen and just hits and kicks and screams. She has been doing this for 20 minutes now, so long it sounds fake but she's still crying real tears and her face is all red. Hello Kitty is on in her room so rather than listen to her rand and rave, I shut her in her room for a few minutes to cool down. Does this sound ok? How would you handle it? (Please don't say her because that accomplishes nothing.)
