Why does the engine cut out as soon as I put it in to gear?

I drive a Holden Kingswood HZ 1978 (ute) with a 308 chev, auto trans. The motor starts fine but as soon as I try to pop it in to reverse or drive, it cuts out..! Any idea what may cause this?
