If, when, the United States splits into different nations, what would people call each other?

I'm not hoping that to happen, but reality nations are not immortal. I've always thought the notion of calling ourselves American was somewhat ignorant since that is taking from the continent's's name. Personally, not out some anti american point of view, I believe people in this country would be better of separated. Not racially, of course. The Texans would be happy, Alaskans too. Hawaiians, etc.?
